Self Portraits

Self portraits are an example of how you see yourself, how you feel others depict you and how you personally express yourself. Artists do this through color, lines, rhythm. Some artists choose to use words in their self portraits incorporating their writing into their portraits. If I was to draw out or paint a self portrait I'd incorporate lots of vibrant colors, thick lines, and no negative space. I'd also somehow incorporate animals into my portrait because I spend lots of my free time taking care of my pets.

Henry Darger

Henry Darger was a visual artist and novelist. Born in 1892 in Chicago, Darger lost his mother at just four years old, at age eight he was placed in the Mission of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic orphanage after his father became ill and could no longer care for himself. Darger was not public about his artwork or secret passions. Darger had written 15,000 page fantasy novel " The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm" His work had not been seen by anyone until 1972 when his apartment had been cleared out shortly before he died. Darger wrote himself into the story as both the betrayer and savior of the child-victim characters depicted in the novel. He wrote these immense novels in order to cope with his difficult and depressing childhood. "I hated to see the day come when I will be grown up. I never wanted to. I wished to be young always." Hannah Hoch

Hannah Hoch was a german artist, she focused in on the dada movement, she is an orginator of the photomontage movement and often her work was made with collage. I chose to write about Hoch because i began studying her work 2 years ago and i find her work and I admire her "new woman" concept. I really like how she depicts people with deformed faces and her use of color and shape.
